Graham Evans

Grahams Evans presentation was one of the more tactile presentation we had. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to stay for the whole presentation. But the stuff that he showed me while I was in class was very helpful. Evans works for a non-profit that targets the act of human trafficking, a problem that occurs not only in third world countries, but happens even on out our backyard (and backyard I mean, Seattle). From that he split us into groups and showed us the parts of his Business Model Canvas. And told us to each as a group fill out a part of the business model canvas. As it seemed that this Business model was a good model to use, not only for a business, but also for a nonprofit.

John Dimmer

John dimmer was one of my favorite guest lectures that we had come into Professor Fry’s class. Just Dimmer was of the first case where I got an actual entrepreneurship atmosphere from. Not saying that the others were not. But the stories that John told the class, kind of proved to me that he was the real deal. What first got me to this impression was the fact that he first owned a Honda dealership somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, and then he decided to enter the airstream market, where he practically took ahold part of the west side of the cascades.
But all in all John Dimmer lectures was based on the funding aspects of running a startup business. He had opened my eyes on the multiple people that you can ask funding for. For example it first starts out with friends and family, then if you want a bigger investment, there are angel investor(s), and so on. Seeing the importance of funding for a business gave me a better understanding of how importance funding can be in running a small business, or any business of some sort. And I feel like he had a lot of experience on the funding, at first the thought of it scared me a bit, but after a while John confirmed to us that it was all part of the process.

Amy Sallin

Amy Sallin a representative of the Burkes Center of Entrepreneurship. Her lectures were a bit different than the previous lectures we had (and previous I mean one, which was Eric Handberg). Amy’s lectures concentrated more on an event that she was a part of for quite a while now which the Business Plan Competition. She talked to how a lot students like us were participating in an event/competition where they enter their business plans into a competition on hopes of getting their first funds started. She explained to us the steps on how to join and the benefits of joining such a completion. She explained to us the benefits of entering such a competition. Not only is a good way for students to get an experience on the toughness and joy of starting a new business, but it was also for us to actively create networks with some investor and hopefully later in the future, when we feel like we do have a competent business idea, that we can use these skills we learned and apply them.

Eric Hanburg

Eric Hamburg’s lecture was one of the first guest speakers we had in the class. From the looks of it, Eric is not only an entrepreneur, but he is also an author, a part of the metro parks committee, let’s just say Eric has seen a lot of things. One of the things he emphasized that not all business are successful there are a lot of business that do well and then crash immediately (something that professor fry has been pushing on us). But actually seeing something that has gone through the ups and down of trying to build wealth was interesting. There was a part of this lecture where he portrayed all of the jobs he been though and the income he was making partaking in that job. As the graph showed parts of his life he was making a ton of income, but other parts he was making enough. This was an eye-opener for me, showing me that the hope of building a business and making tons of profit is not an impossible thing to do, but it can be difficult at time, and kind of scared me from the idea of starting my business, but that’s a whole different story

Three Business Idea

Food Courier Business - This business will provide delivery services to patrons who would want food delivered to them. We will pick up and and deliver the food to your house with any fast food chain or restaurant locally in your area. (i.e Pho, Teriyaki Restaurants, McDonald,Chipotle etc). First we would start off with an employment of 4 people, each with their own cars.  Hopefully in the future we can produce an app where patrons can find their favorite local restaurants and order off and online menu and in the end it will give them a ending price. The app would merge with their Debit or Credit card information, and whatever the total comes out out be that will be charged from their account. We will hopefully have a small office to start out from, and hopefully expand into a full building.

Food Truck - This business will cater to those who have no time to sit at a restaurant and order something. Instead they could come to out Food Truck which where we will hurriedly prepare their food in a clean and tasty kind of way. The type of food we serve is a fusion of Mexican and Korean foods. Where we blend the exotic taste of South America, with the rich history of Korea. Our food truck will have a different special every week. And to find out where out next location is you would need to follow us on a social media site, such as Twitter or Facebook, to figure out where our next location will be.

Errand Service- This business will run errands for people who dont have time too. You need to pick up groceries but too busy looking after your child? no worries our business will save you. With a flat fee of $____ (currently not available yet) you will be able to get your time wasting errands done. in a time efficient way.

Startup.Com

Startup.com is a documentary directed by Chris Hegedus and Jehane Noujiam, that follows two friends, Kaleil Tuzman and Tom Herman, on their goal to achieving a website portal that allows citizens in local communities to access, or pay for city services, jobs or receive community information. This movie is your typical documentary will very bad camera shakes and mediocre editing skills ( but we can argue about that later). But overall it is a great documentary and in my opinion a great film to look back on the see the rise and fall of a company. As Govworks (before it known as Public Data Systems) just began to start it only started out with a grand total of 8 employees. Govworks came into play to pay or apply for city services , jobs or receive city information. Govworks.com was inspired by Tuzman after he found an old parking ticket in his apartment. The service delivery for Govworks.com was made to offer the service that allowed people to pay for their parking fees through a internet portal. In matter of a few months the company raised its employment by about 20 people and by the end of October 1998 there was 70 people working for GovWorks. The business as a whole was gaining ground and things would get better from there. Tuzam was making deals with big investing companies and gaining trust. But something soon went wrong, and it went all downhill from their. On the day of their website exposure, there were a few bugs still concurrent in the website. and they were not able to launch Govworks unfortunately. As after a awhile Govworks filed for bankruptcy around March 2001.

All in all this documentary is a must see in my opinion, if one would like to see the rise and fall of a company this films could help to understand what to and what not to do. As there are many lessons that can be taught throughout this movie and hopefully through that you will not make the same mistake

What i Want Out of This Class

What I Want Out of This Class

As i enter my second week into this course, this class gained my interest in many ways about business. (something i really never had interest in before). What Professor Fry has taught me that being a business is not an easy thing to accomplish, business are bound to fail no matter what. There are a few that due persevere ( But that's another story). As we talk more about the business life and the struggles that one pursues to start a small business. It made me think, if i ran a business will it do well?, will i be able to keep it going?, how long will it last? As i entered this class my hope for me was to learn ways that will teach me how to identify the good ideas from the bad, to weed out the business ideas that would have no use in the market today. And that's exactly what i'm learning throughout this course. Professor Fry shows us examples on how a market can have a extensive value on a company. Another thing i hopefully i could pull out from this class is ways that a person whom has no business experience whatsoever, if that person will be able to run a small business, and how so, what are the steps into being successful.Hopefully by the end of this class i will have and idea on how to run a small business, and maybe even start my own small business. And grow it and hopefully make it into a profitable company
